Adjustable sights or fixed sights

Adjustable sights or fixed sights
I overheard someone at the range today say that he preferred fixed sights over adjustable ones for the simple reason, and this is a direct quote, "Adjustable sights just reinforce bad habits."
Does this guy have a point or is he full of hot air? I never really gave it much thought until today and thought maybe he had a point. After all, if you're shooting to the left, most people don't try to figure out why. They just whip out the small screwdriver and ratchet the sight until they hit what they're aiming at.
A fixed sight, on the other hand, can only shoot straight barring some grotesque malfunction at the factory.
So which one is it - fixed or adjustable? And no, I'm not talking about mortgages, either!

Re: Adjustable sights or fixed sights
Velocity varies the POI greatly, which adjustable sights can easily accommodate. Left or right compensation may be for a slight pull you can not help or even tell you are doing. How can shooting better be bad? However on a defensive weapon for close range, sights that don't break or get out of alignment are a bonus where minute of belt buckle is all that is required at very short ranges. Different sights for different purposes. The "expert" is full of something besides hot air.
Trying to remember to aim six inches up and and inch left to hit that rabid dog across my yard is not where I want to be.

Mark Twain once said, "It ain't so much that folk's is ignorant. It's just that they know so dang much that just ain't so".
Sights are sights, they work for your purposes or you change them or change the gun.

Re: Adjustable sights or fixed sights
My problem doesn't seem to be gun sight problem as much as slowly deteriorating eyesight. It's not bad but I can tell age is sneaking up on me.
Re: Adjustable sights or fixed sights
If you like iron sights, there used to be a company that made an adjustable aperature, much like a peep sight, to mount on glasses at the exact point you look through with your dominate eye to shoot. Adjust the aperature for clarity and depth of field and the sights and target are clear. Might be hard to find now but knowing they existed, you may be able to track one down.Volzfan wrote:My problem doesn't seem to be gun sight problem as much as slowly deteriorating eyesight.
